Briar is the main protagonist of the story, a princess who has been trapped in a loveless marriage to secure her kingdom's alliance. She yearns for freedom and to be able to choose her own path. Bridget Bordeaux, the narrator of the audiobook, does an excellent job of bringing Briar to life. She captures the character's essence perfectly, making the listener feel every emotion that Briar experiences.
Next is Larkin, a thief who has no interest in getting involved in the affairs of the fae world. He only wants to make money and stay alive. Larkin's character is complex, and the authors have done a good job of giving him depth. The development of his character throughout the story is subtle but noticeable.
Then there is Caspian, the prince who is Briar's husband. He is a typical villain, but the authors have tried to make him more than that. Unfortunately, his character falls flat, and he doesn't leave a lasting impression.
Other characters, such as the High Fae and the gods, are interesting but not explored enough. They add depth to the world-building, but their roles in the plot are limited.
Now, coming to the plot. As I mentioned earlier, the plot is unique and has potential. But the execution of it is weak. The story is slow-paced, and it takes a while for things to start happening. The plot twists are predictable, and the climax doesn't have the impact it should have had.
The writing style is good, but the story is let down by the lack of tension and suspense. The authors have tried to create a dark and twisted world, but it doesn't feel fully realized. The pacing and plot issues make it difficult to fully immerse yourself in the story.
Despite the flaws in the story, the audiobook narration is excellent. Bridget Bordeaux does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. Her voice is clear, and she uses different tones and inflections to differentiate between the characters. Her narration is what kept me listening to the audiobook.
